"What is Christmas?"

Next week, we will all be thinking about tinsel, stockings, carols, presents and trees. Children will be asking Mom and Dad what they might get under the tree, hoping for that special gift they have their hearts set on. Dad will be thinking about the great dinner and the gathering of his extended family around the table. Christmas is certainly a joyous occasion for families. The question is "do we really understand what this holiday means, other than trees, stockings, carols and toys?"

Department stores and "Big Box" stores do their best merchandising at this time of year; it's all about "the bottom line" of profit; not "prophet". In reality, we should be giving honor and glory on this holiday; everything else is secondary. This holiday is the fulfillment of biblical prophecy; the birth of the "Messiah"; the Redeemer of man and the propitiation for all of man's sins: that means Jesus is the vehicle for forgiveness of the sins of all men who choose to accept Him as Lord and Savior. Christmas actually has nothing to do with "elves, Santa, the North Pole or flying reindeer"; it has everything to do with God's love for mankind by providing us with a way to have our sins erased and attain righteousness through His Son's sacrifice on the cross.

We live in a society that doesn't like to acknowledge Jesus very much; yet, everybody wants this holiday. Atheists should just go about their regular business on Christmas Day, as this day is a celebration of the Christ, not "the elves or Santa"! Muslims, Hindus, Maoists, Marxists or any group that doesn't acknowledge Jesus should not have any part in Christmas; it is a CHRISTIAN HOLIDAY!

Over the next several days, I hope everyone who recognizes Jesus as Lord and Savior has a great time with their loved ones. Laugh and tell stories, eat well and celebrate His birth, and talk about His Resurrection and what it all means, to you and to your friends in Christ.

Presents are a nice thing to receive from anyone, and I don't begrudge anybody a gift; but don't forget the "Ultimate Gift" which was given by Jesus. Before you open any presents on Christmas morning, think about His "presence" in your life. Those few minutes you spend with Him will be well worth it; after all, he wants to spend an "eternity" with you!

(This is my last blog until January 4, 2012; have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! T.P.)
