"Bad Back"

Dear Reader,

Due to some back problems I will not be posting anything until January 5, 2011. The Doc says to sit and do nothing; like a congressman!

I wish all of you the Merriest Christmas and the Happiest New Year!!!

Thanks for allowing me to write to you, Thomas Paine.

"From My Heart to Yours"

Do you ever think about the decisions you have made over the course of your life? I've second guessed many of my decisions over the years, and I have to admit, I would change some of them if I had the chance. The one choice I have made in my life that I'm sure was the very best I ever made, concerned a young and beautiful girl. After 12,053 days, 33 Christmases, 33 Thanksgivings and 33 birthdays, I still wake up amazed that I was able to marry the most wonderful woman on earth. Oliver Wendell Holmes said,"Love is the magic key which opens the gates of happiness", and he was right. When you find someone that means more to you than you mean to yourself ,you are among the most fortunate of men. My Adrienne is the half of myself that God intended me to have, the marriage vows say, "The two shall become one flesh", and in my case this couldn't be truer. I look at her today as if every day is the first time I saw her. I watch her from across crowded rooms and she still occupies all of my attention. Between us, the years have lost their meaning. I remember an instance of walking with her when we were newly married and an ice cream truck drove by our apartment, she remarked about it like a six year old saying "Ice cream is always better from the truck!" Of course, I couldn't refuse that request; her amazing gift was her ability to make me continually feel like we would always be like young lovers regardless of time's passing.

Percy Shelly said, "Soul meets soul on lover's lips", this is not just the kiss, but the words that we have passed in conversation after conversation over countless dinners where our faces were the only ones we saw in the room, regardless of the crowd. I remember how she looked, in a green outfit, on the day she first met my parents; nervous and her eyes sparkling, I couldn't wait for Mom and Dad to meet her. I remember our second anniversary. Adrienne had a candlelight dinner prepared at home and I had to work late. I called to let her know what was happening; overtime was mandatory, I had to stay. When I got home, I was greeted by my tired young bride. I could see the disappointment on her face, and I realized what she had gone through to make it a special night. What she didn't realize was that every night was a special night as long as she was there. My nights are still special! We have had hard times, but we never had harsh times because we have faced them together. I am truly blessed. Together, we produced a beautiful daughter, who constantly amazes us in her wisdom and character. She has been a real gift from God.

Even though all these years have gone by, it seems but an instant, a flash of light. I look at the many yesterdays with great fondness, yet I still look forward to the tomorrows to come with expectant joy.

I'd like to close with a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson and dedicate it to my Adrienne, "What lies behind us, and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us." All of my love on our anniversary, to my lovely wife Adrienne, I adore her!

(This is my last entry this week as I am nursing a sore back. See you all Monday!)

"Only Agree With Me!"

Have you ever been chastised for speaking out of turn? Have you ever been exasperated when you weren't allowed to express your opinion? I had certain teachers who had particular viewpoints and they didn't appreciate conflicting opinions from their students. I told my daughter when she was growing up, never to be afraid to stand up for herself; to speak out. I also told her to speak from facts, not opinions. No argument can survive unless it is factual in its content.

When my daughter was in college, she took a class called "The Bible as Literature". As my daughter is a strong believer, she used this opportunity to spread the Gospel. Her teacher didn't appreciate some of her classroom participation; especially, when her statements conflicted with his. Unfortunately for him, my daughter is well versed in the study of the bible; probably more qualified than he. At one point, he told her not to speak anymore. Sometimes authority exerts censorship.

Recently, leftist bloviator, Ed Schultz of MSNBC, had Al Sharpton on his program. The subject of conversation was Rush Limbaugh. This was an "all you can eat" diatribe against the radio icon. The usual leftist rant was foremost in the dialogue; racism! Every time the left launches an attack, it starts with this spurious charge. Sharpton claims Limbaugh is a racist at every occasion; he claims Limbaugh is divisive, yet, was it not Sharpton who accused Glenn Beck of hi-jacking "our day" last August. By "our day" does he mean a day that is limited to certain Americans and not others? That seems to be divisive to me! The quotes from Limbaugh's show were talking about "reparations" to former slave families. The generation that owned slaves, has long since died away. The current programs provided to all minorities are more than adequate to give aid to all who need it.

Sharpton wants the FCC to refuse Limbaugh the right to speak over public air waves. Old Al doesn't like what Rush is saying on the radio. I've listened to Rush Limbaugh for a number of years, and I can understand why Al doesn't like him. He and Rush are polar opposites politically. The extreme liberal doesn't want America to hear any conflicting opinions from the conservatives in the media. The charge of racism is a joke, but it always gets attention. I'm sure if Mr. Sharpton could have his way, not only would Mr. Limbaugh be banned, but also Beck, Hannity, Mike Reagan and every other conservative on planet earth.

Sorry Rev.: that First Amendment is for everybody. As long as Joy Behar, Bill Maher, Ed Schultz and the rest of the leftist fanatics have a piece of the air waves, Rush can have his piece too! Free speech is a two way street Al, deal with it!

"Daily Routine"

I got up at around 5:00AM this morning, pretty regular for me. Simon, my dog, was ready for food and a walk. We went downstairs and he waited patiently as I filled his food bowl and changed his water dish. After he ate, we went outside. It was cold and crisp at 5:00 am; it was quiet, very still. I saw the grey pick-up truck that always goes by on our morning walk, I saw our newspaper delivery lady and waved as she went by; she's very nice. Simon picked out some prime property and did his business. We cleaned up and went home. This is a normal start of most of my days. Each of us has a routine, a regular way of doing things, familiar actions which we become accustomed to in our daily lives. I don't like to vary from my daily routine. I like having a set schedule in order to accomplish the things I want to during the course of a day.

We like the security of "the usual thing" each day. I like my morning coffee, the news on television and a regular breakfast. Children rise, complain, get dressed and go to school; they even have their set routines each day. Sometimes the smallest thing can change the entire outlook for us on any given day. A late newspaper, running out of coffee or missing a bus can alter our attitude for the rest of our day.

Sixty-nine years ago, on a Sunday, people of America got up and began their daily routines. Some were cooking breakfast, some were on their way to church and some were just rising from sleep. No one was expecting anything unusual to happen on that day. America was at peace. We were sending help to our friends in England, as they battled the NAZI threat, but we weren't militarily involved in the conflict in Europe. On a balmy morning in our furthest western territory, it was peaceful; our Pacific Fleet was resting comfortably in Pearl Harbor when the Imperial Japanese Navy launched an unprovoked attack on the United States. We were caught flat-footed, like a boxer not expecting to be hit. Japanese fighters gave us a devastating body blow; we didn't see it coming.

Across America, the news spread like wildfire. America went from peaceful routine to anger, sorrow and resolve. It is rumored that Hitler was extremely upset with the Japanese; he didn't want America in the war just yet. The Empire of Japan awakened a sleeping giant and now they would incur his wrath. The act of the Japanese probably was the key to the Allied victory in WWII. Had we not entered the war at that time, Hitler could have achieved victory in Europe; Britain couldn't have held out very much longer. Without a free England, we would have nowhere to launch an invasion on the European Continent; then Europe belonged to Hitler. In a way, the Japanese helped us save the world by their ill-advised aggression on that December morning. They disrupted our "routine" and changed the course of history. America woke up and the world benefited. I hold those members of that GREATEST GENERATION in high esteem, because of them, we are still America today!

"IT'S OUR MONEY,NOT YOURS!"

When I was in the Army I had to take classes in first aid. One never knows what type of injuries you will encounter on the field of battle. Obviously, gun-shot wounds and shrapnel from explosions are the most common wounds. There are also wounds caused by punji sticks that were coated with excrement to cause infection, even broken bones were fairly common when falls and trips took place while climbing and walking in difficult terrain. Every soldier has some training in order to help a fallen comrade in times of trouble until medical help can be rendered by a doctor in a field hospital. All that attention is done in order to not make a bad situation worse than it already is. No soldier is left untreated on a battlefield regardless of the severity of his wounds; all efforts are made to ease the pain of any casualty of a conflict.

As a nation ,we are on an economic battlefield. The casualties of this battlefield are the unemployed and the American taxpayer. We are over-taxed and under served by our government. We currently send billions of dollars overseas in foreign aid; some is sent to nations that publicly preach against American policy. When our economy is in such a dire state, why are we sending American taxpayers' money to people who stand against us in the international forum? I think it would be a good idea to "cut them off"; let those who support their disdain for America send them the aid they seem to so desperately need! Strangely, we seem to be asking our taxpayers to take on additional burdens in the trimming of our giant deficit, rather than to cease in the disbursement of American funds to foreign lands.

Recently, President Obama has appointed a deficit panel to find ways to trim our debt and combat this failing economy. He has also extended a ban on drilling for oil in our southern gulf. The deficit panel has suggested that we add a tax to fuel. Any economist worth his salt will tell you that added fuel cost will drive up cost on all goods, and add to an inflationary spiral that America will soon face because of the printing of more dollars by the Fed. The failure to pursue more fuel in our gulf will cause us to be more dependent on foreign sources, and send a message to those oil producers to kick up those fuel prices to the United States. If we need to generate more tax, why not raise import taxes on foreign goods, including fuel. As long as we are going to be slaves to OPEC, let's get some tax money from them; not the stressed American taxpayer. Additional taxes, on any level to the American people is a STUPID IDEA! Added tax stifles investment; when investment is stifled the economy suffers, and recovery is slowed. Putting additional funds in the hands of an overgrown bureaucracy will not help the American people. I believe by now we have to admit that the "Stimulus" has stimulated little except for government jobs, which do very little for the GNP.

Mr. Obama, please stop throwing American dollars away! The American taxpayer will spend it more wisely than any bureaucrat. IT'S OUR MONEY, AND WE NEED IT NOW!!

"True Believers?"

I have been a fan of the Chicago White Sox for a very long time. In 1959, my bedroom wall was covered with clippings from the Chicago Tribune about the Sox. I have a framed picture of Al Lopez, after the Sox won the pennant. I have pennants from each time the Sox won the division. I have Pizza Hut place mats with former Sox players on them. I have an official ball from the 2005 World Series; a prized possession. I have seen the best and the worst from the "South-Siders". I remember sitting at Comiskey Park and watching Wilbur Wood blow a seven run lead against the Texas Rangers; the "knuckler" didn't work that day.

In 2005, my White Sox won the World Series; I was emotional. All my life I was waiting for this prize; the crown jewel of baseball. All my life I saw the Sox treated as the second child of Chicago baseball; the poor cousin of the CUBS. Strangely, after the World Series in '05, Sox fans appeared from everywhere, suddenly being a Sox fan was in fashion. I had no problem with Mayor Daley cheering the Sox on, as he is a life-long Sox fan. It was the "band wagon jumpers" that really bugged me. I believe you should "stick to your guns" if you truly believe in something; it speaks well of your character.

Since the mid-term elections, I've seen an amazing transformation in the Democratic Party. Suddenly I see fiscal conservatism flowing from the mouths of the spenders. Those same folks who voted for Obamacare, driving us into a financially unsound program, are preaching budget cuts and common sense spending. Who are these people? I know this isn't only applicable to Democrats; there are plenty of Republicans who operate in the same manner and I find it disgusting. I feel this is a disservice to those who voted for these people with a certain expectation of philosophical truth. I honestly believe if there had been an overwhelming Democratic victory in November, we would be seeing the polar opposite views from some of these "converts" to conservatism. Where is the strength of character we should expect from our elected officials? Even our President seems to be "changing his spots", spouting financial responsibility, after his policies have plunged us into an abyss of fiscal nightmares.

Who are these new "fans"? Where were they when the "team was in trouble"? Are their principles so easily compromised that they will "jump off the band wagon" at the slightest sign of trouble, and so quickly jump on the opposing "band wagon" in an effort to be with the "winners"?

As Americans, we must now keep a watchful eye on these new "believers". We need to make sure they are who they say they are. We don't need "pseudo-cons", we don't need "pretenders". Let's see who are the "True Believers".

"It's All About Choice"

As most of you know, I like sports. World Series, Super Bowl, NBA Play-offs and boxing matches are pretty high on my priority list when it comes to my television choices. I also like the History Channel, as history is one of my interests. As most of you must have surmised, I also watch the news on a regular basis. Breaking news will sometimes take precedence over viewing a sporting event or a documentary. Immediate importance is the dictating factor when making those choices. As responsible people, we make choices every day; what to eat, what to wear, routes to work etc. Some choices are made for fun, some are made for necessity. We are sometimes judged by the choices we make during important situations. I don't remember what movie this quote is from, but I find it quite telling when some folks face unpleasant decisions: "I don't believe I'll think about that today". Choosing to ignore bad situations will not make them go away, and pushing them to the rear in your priorities will only show fear and indecision.

Once again, WIKILEAKS is in the news. It seems that this outlaw website is publishing American classified information once again. WIKILEAKS masquerades as a guardian of the oppressed, when in reality, it is an organization engaged in espionage and criminality. More delicate military information is again revealed to our enemies, more revealed delicate diplomatic conversations are now giving America an aura of incompetence in security methods. WIKILEAKS has yet to be pursued for prosecution by the United States for this invasion into our national security. Not a single charge has been filed by Attorney General Eric Holder; our Justice Department continues to sit on its hands while our nation is put into continued jeopardy by this rogue organization!

Well, good news is afoot; Eric Holder is springing into action! Yes America, our dedicated Attorney General is in "hot pursuit" on an important and pressing issue of great national importance. Is it the voter intimidation? Is it pursuing illegal drug dealing aliens? Is it the prosecution of 911 terrorists? No America; it is the pursuit of the World Cup in 2022 in Switzerland! Yes America, once again Barack Obama is totally clueless in his priorities of national importance. Obama believes it is more important to send our Attorney General to Switzerland on a quest for games that will take place in twelve years, then for him to remain in the United States pursuing prosecution against WIKILEAKS! Why is Barack Obama so totally clueless? What does he see that the rest of the American people don't? I, for one, don't care whether we acquire the World Cup in 2022 or not! I do want WIKILEAKS prosecuted for breaching American security as quickly as possible! When will Mr. Obama get it? Will Mr. Obama ever get it? This is all about choices and priorities; where are Barack Obama's choices and priorities?

"Winner or Wiener!"

Vince Lombardi, 96-34-6; Don Shula, 328-156; George Halas, 321-142-31; Hall of Fame Coaches of the National Football League are the models most coaches choose to emulate when they embark on a career in football. These names are among the "cream of the crop", when one speaks of the very best who ever called a play. Their faces are emblazoned in sculpture in Canton, Ohio; they hold places of honor and, they are well deserved.

Matt Millen, 31-97; Marion Campbell, 34-80-1; David Shula, 19-52; Joe Bugel, 24-56; David McGinnis, 17-40; who are these men? They would be in the "football hall of shame", if one existed. They are not alone in their futile attempts to become a head coach in the NFL; there are many men who have pursued this path but have "come up short". I don't think I've ever heard a new coach say "I'd like to be Rod Marinelli", poor Rod went 0-16 as a head coach in Detroit; not much to brag about. Names like Halas and Lombardi are often the icons referred to by fledgling coaches when they assume the mantle of power on an NFL team. Nobody is calling Matt Millen for advice on how to run a championship caliber team! Poor Matt has a history of bad decisions!

Currently, there is a crisis in Korea. The communist lunatic from the north has attacked the democratic south. A provocative act has caused an atmosphere of unrest that is being felt around the world. The United States is a staunch ally of the South Korean government, and is obligated to come to her aid. South Korea has been under constant threat from the north for a very long time, and North Korea is itching to use their military and nuclear power to intimidate their southern cousins. The big question is: how will America respond to this threat to a democratic ally? Who will America look to for advice in a volatile situation?

Last week, former President Jimmy Carter, was seen at the White House. It seems Mr. Carter was scheduled for meetings with National Security Advisor, Tom Donilon. No subjects to be discussed were released to the public. Carter had been previously been a guest at the White House, in 2009 he visited President Obama and National Security Advisor, James Jones. I must assume Mr. Obama believes Carter is a good source of counsel when it comes to foreign conflict and military advice.

I remember the Carter administration with dread. I remember 444 days of captivity at the Iranian Embassy. I remember a failed rescue attempt that gave our military a black eye in front of the entire world. I remember the release of those hostages on the day Ronald Reagan was inaugurated; a real slap to Carter. Jimmy Carter is no "hall of famer" when it comes to national security; his ineptitude is legendary. Why is Mr. Obama consulting him? This is the equivalent of Mike Ditka calling Abe Gibron for advice! Mr. Obama would be better served to look at the actions of Ronald Reagan, than the failed policies of Jimmy Carter. One is a winner, the other is a wiener!
